A wish at midnight is enough to alter a life.

A. D. Reece has crafted your next comfort read this fall. Wayward Magic is a new tale based off the classic Cinderella stories. The twist? Take your pick!

  • Our Cinderfella tries to kill his prince

  • The fairy Godmother is a bit too new at her job

  • Cinderfella looses more than just one shoe

  • …there’s a war brewing and our random tavernkeep may be the only one who can stop it.

Rebellion is sometimes a story persevering. To survive is to allow the next generation to hear our stories. To garner hope. To give us a chance for something better than what we were handed today.

Wayward Magic by A. D. Reece

“My books will likely never follow a coming-out trope. Enough of us have seen it done, it’s the favorite way for the media to shape our unique stories into palatable mush for people outside of the queer community, and I don’t think it needs to be talked about in my books when my queer characters could be teaching a dragon to fly instead.” Reece says.

While Wayward Magic doesn’t shy away from commenting on governmental and societal discrimination of queer, bipoc, and disabled people, it’s also not sole point of the story. If you need escapism, it’s here. All without sacrificing the message of acceptance and activism.

Will I like this book?

This is a stand-alone novel! Hate the long waits between releases? We do too. Wayward Magic has an ending that is wrapped up nicely and leaves you feeling content. While the authors plans on writing more books in this world featuring it’s colorful cast, this book is a story with a beginning, middle, and end. This is Eli’s tale. But if you fall in love with the side characters, don’t get too sad when the book is over. There may be more to come!

“OK I’m sold”, you say. But for those of you still on the fence, here are some books that bring the same vibe as A. D. Reece:

  • The Princess Bride by William Goldman

  • Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine

  • Carry On by Rainbow Rowell

  • A Cruel Prince by Holly Black

Today is not the day I get eaten by magic.

Eli in Wayward Magic by A. D. Reece

“I want Eli to be held, read, and understood and, by golly, everyone is getting his queer adult panic.” says Reece, after being recognized both online and off at book festivals in her hometown of Sacramento. “More than one [person] asked after Eli or told me how excited they were to know my novel was coming out this year. There are times when people come talk to me about Eli that I think maybe everyone else is more excited even than I am.”

Ready to join this excitement? Preorders are live for both the hardcover and eBook editions, straight from the publisher’s website!

Why do preorders mean so much?

For a mico-press like Plush & Regal, we are small and new. When you preorder a book, we get the money now to pay for the print order that happens months before it lands at your door. This is our first fiction release and we’re going all out! So your orders leading up to the official release mean the world and help us run while staying out of debt. So thank you!

Stay tuned for a book tour announcement later this year.
